Course content
This course gives a thorough introduction to selected theories of linguistics, in some cases from a more general standpoint of the philosophy of science or history of linguistics. The course will focus on one or more theories or compare a range of different theories.

- have knowledge of one or more linguistic theories, possibly also from the more general perspective of philosophy of science or history of linguistics.

- are able to explain and discuss the main characteristics of selected theories of linguistics.
- can discuss the relation between empirical data and theory and how they work together.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures/seminars. The course is taught in English or Norwegian. Students are expected to participate actively in the lectures/seminars for example by presentations, comments and other contributions. Students are required to use the course learning platform regularly.
Students should expect that this 7.5 credit course equates with approximately 10 hours of work per week, including teaching time.
Obligatory assignment: 1-2 compulsory assignments, approximately 3000 words in total.
An approved obligatory assignment is valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester).

The course is assessed by a written home examination (3000 - 4000 words, 5 days). The exam must be answered in Norwegian or English.
Recommended previous knowledge
Bachelor's degree with specialization in Nordic languages, English, French or German.
It is expected that students who will be completing the course work and exam in English have a good command of the English language, enabling them to communicate well at an academic level. The level of English proficiency should be at least B2, preferably C1, using the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages scale.
Required previous knowledge
At least 7.5 credits (studiepoeng) of courses in linguistics at ENG2000-, FRA2000-, LING2000-, NORD2000-, or TYSK2000-level.
