About the course

Course content

The course is a supervised independent study, organized so that it thematically supports the student`s work on their master`s thesis, providing the student with in-depth insight into the field of research of which the master`s thesis is part. The course provides the student with the necessary competence to orient themselves and evaluate, comment and discuss research literature, as well as to select relevant theoretical approaches for their own master`s thesis. In consultation with the lecturer, students choose a selection of literature, preparing a syllabus of 400 - 500 pages.

Candidates who have completed this course will have acquired the following learning outcomes, defined as knowledge, skills and general competence:

- is able to comment on and evaluate relevant research literature

- is able to place the selected literature within the context of relevant national/international research

- is able to systematically search for, select and justify the selection of syllabus literature

- is able to present and discuss research work in line with scientific principles

General competence

The candidate

- is able to identify and contextualize a chosen research question using existing research literature

Learning methods and activities

The lecturer will make arrangements for students whose thematic interests are related to work together and support each other. Supervision is offered individually or in groups, as relevant.

  • Mandatory participation in the first week of teaching

Further on evaluation

Assignment in three parts: syllabus, annotated bibliography and reflection note.

Specific conditions:

Compulsory activities from previous semester may be approved by the department.

It is not possible for students who have passed the exam in SKIP3007 to retake the exam in a semester where this course is not taught. Students who did not pass the exam, or who did not complete the exam due to illness may submit the exam in a semester where this course is not taught; however, they will not receive any supervision.

Required previous knowledge

Requires admission to the Master`s Programme in Language and Communication in the Professions.

Required previous knowledge: SKIP3001 and SKIP3002.

80% attendance at SKIP 3004 must be approved
