Course content

- Stress analyses
- Load case definition
- Elasto-plastic analyses
- Failure mechanics
- Buckling of pillars and plates
Learning outcome
Knowledge: After completed module, the candidate is to have theoretical basis for the determination of: Bending moments, shear forces and normal force distribution diagrams
- Stress distribution on beam cross sections
- Pillar and plate buckling capacities
- Elasto-plastic conditions of beam systems
Skills: After completed module, the candidate is to have skills in application of:
- Methods for establishing bending moment, shear force and shear force distribution diagrams for static undetermined beam systems
- Manual methods for establishing stress distribution on beam sections
- Use of a digital tool to design beam constructions
- Manual methods for establishing elasto-plastic capacities in a system of beams
- Manual methods for establishing pillar and plate buckling capacities
Competence: After completed module, the candidate shall be competent in:
- Design of static problems with regards to geometry
- Boundary conditions
- Load application and section properties
- Determination of relevant dimensions and acceptance criteria for a static undetermined beam system
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, compulsory theoretical exercises and practical laboratory exercise in groups.

Mandatory work requirements: 13 exercises are given, of which 11 are required to be submitted and approved in order to sit for the exam.
Allowed aids at exam: Technical formula books and calculators of own choice
Re-sit exam: Oral examination.
Re-sit exam: following semester.
