About the course

Course content

The course gives a theoretical specialization in one or more topics in Scandinavian linguistics. The course explores a topic in one subfield of linguistics (e.g. grammar, pragmatics, sociolinguistics), or an interdisciplinary topic spanning more than one of those subfields. The course may build upon themes explored in lower-level courses.

Candidates who have passed this course:

  • have in-depth understanding of a topic of central importance in Scandinavian linguistics
  • have critical insight into scientific approaches and methods relevant to the analysis of the subject material

Skills

Candidates who have passed this course:

  • can use relevant theoretical notions and specialist scientific literature from the relevant discipline(s)
  • are able to write substantial analytical and/or argumentative texts according to academic norms for the use of sources, quotations, references etc.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and/or seminars. Obligatory assignments: 1 written/oral assignment. Approved obligatory assignments are valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester).

Further on evaluation

Term paper (approximately 4000 words).

It is not possible for students who have passed the exam in NORD3104 to retake the exam in a semester where this course is not taught. Students who did not pass the exam, or who did not complete the exam due to illness may submit the exam in a semester where this course is not taught; however, they will not receive any supervision.

Required previous knowledge

Admission to the MA program in Scandinavian studies or the five-year teaching education program with an integrated master's degree in Scandinavian Studies.
