Course content

The course deals with and develops those aspects of Norwegian as a second language that are difficult from a second language perspective. Norwegian is described from a cross- and multilinguistic perspective. A systematic and typological description of global languages, as well as Norwegian from a contrastive perspective in relation to significant minority languages is emphasized. Interlanguages as a concept is emphasized, along with an introduction to the linguistic background for this concept.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

The candidate:

  • has an understanding of how language can be described and compared with regard to typological perspectives
  • is familiar with key issues, theories, problems, processes, and tools in cross-linguistic descriptions, and can relate these to the acquisition of a new language
  • has good knowledge of Norwegian language structure seen in a comparative perspective with particular emphasis on traits that are regarded as generally difficult for second language learners
  • can analyze and describe second language learners' interlanguage as well as develop plausible hypotheses concerning the source of certain linguistic differences

Skills

The candidate:

  • can define and apply basic concepts within linguistic analysis
  • is familiar with and can use the tools of the discipline to describe and compare key features of different languages
  • can perform linguistic analyses of an interlanguage
  • can assess the subject matter in relation to language learning and language teaching
  • can use his or her knowledge of language differences actively in planning, organizing, and implementing teaching of Norwegian as a second language
  • can present the material orally and in writing

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and seminars. The obligatory written assignment must be submitted and approved before the student is permitted to take the written examination. The written assignment should be approx. 1500 words. Approved obligatory assignments are valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester).
