Course content

Practical and theoretical introduction to work with sound art, spatialization, sensors and microcontrollers, programming of interactive sound, relevant aesthetic issues and art historical context.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

The candidate:

  • has insight into the use of sound as an artistic tool and which carries a meaning content beyond the musical expression
  • knows key examples of sound-based art
  • knows key concepts for characterization of everyday listening and sound environment
  • knows how to use sensors and microcontrollers for physical computing
  • knows some basic ways to program microcontrollers to let sensors control sound processing
  • knows basic spatialization techniques (ambisonics, vbap, multi-channel audio playback)

Skills

The candidate:

  • can compose with concrete sound, including the use of field recordings
  • can work practically with sensors and microcontrollers for digital sound processing
  • can connect programming languages, external sensors, and audio programs to interactive audio systems
  • has technical skills for working with sound in rooms, spatialization and other playback techniques

Learning methods and activities

The course is taught in thematic blocks with lectures, group projects and practical exercises. Each block is arranged as a concentrated workshop of 2-4 days duration. Further information about the scope and requirements for exercises is given in Blackboard at the start of the semester. The result from these exercises prepare the students for the examination arrangement Work.

Instruction is obligatory and demands minimum 80% attendance.

Each thematic part is assessed through one or more practical projects, where the students individually and in groups apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired during the thematic part. The examination arrangement Work will result in the creation of something new, that either combines the exercises together or goes into more depth for one of them.

Creative Music Technology (MMUST)
Music Performance (MMUSP)

Required previous knowledge

MUST1060 Basic Music Technology 2 or equivalent. Requires admission to the Bachelor's programme in Music Technology. Students admitted to the Bachelor's programme in Fine Art (BBK) may also apply.
