Course content

The course consists of the following main topics: algorithmic composition and advanced audio processing methods. Performance oriented software, interactive use of music technology, live electronics. Introduction to programming in Python and Csound by modification of example implementations

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

The candidate

  • has insight in aesthetic practice based on digital tools for performance and composition
  • can identify common methods for algorithmic composition
  • has knowledge of advanced forms of audio processing
  • knows how their own custom programs and technologies can be combined with commercial and off-the-shelf tools.
  • knows the basic syntax and processing in Python and Csound
  • has insight into interfaces between different technologies and programming languages

Skills:

The candidate

  • can compose sound pieces based on algorithmic methods and combine these with advanced forms of audio synthesis.
  • has practical experience with realtime control of automatic composition processes
  • can develop technical solutions to specific musical problems they may encounter in composition, improvisation and performance.
  • can reflect on the use of technology in the creative process

Learning methods and activities

The course is taught in thematic blocks containing lectures, group projects and practical exercises. Each block is arranged as a concentrated workshop of 2-4 days duration. Information about exercises and requirements is given in Blackboard at semester start. There will be up to 10 exercises divided between scheduled workshops and follow-up work after the workshops.

Instruction is obligatory and demands minimum 80% attendance.

Music production and performance with an accompanying written reflection. All components of the assessment must be passed. If you fail on one part of the examination you must retake the part which you have failed.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Creative Music Technology (MMUST)
Music Performance (MMUSP)

Required previous knowledge

Admission to the Master's programme in Music Technology. The course overlaps fully with MUST2052 and cannot be chosen by students who have taken this course before, or have a similar course in their bachelor's level education.
