Course content

This course provides in-depth knowledge and insight into various language difficulties and conditions that occur after stroke, traumatic brain injury or dementia, as well as knowledge and insight into swallowing disorders. The subject provides knowledge of various assessment and treatment methods for rehabilitation.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

This course provides the student with basic knowledge of

• theoretical and practical aspects related to different types of linguistic outcomes and difficulties for people with aphasia and other acquired language and speech disorders.
• methods and tools for assessment and treatment of language and speech difficulties for people with aphasia or other acquired language and speech difficulties.
• anatomy and physiology of swallowing
• causes, incidence and symptoms of swallowing disorders (dysphagia)
• methods and tools for clinical assessment of eating and swallowing function

Skills:

After completing the course, the student should be able to use various methods of assessment in order to plan, implement and evaluate rehabilitation for people with aphasia and/or other acquired conditions that lead to language and speech difficulties, and/or swallowing difficulties.

General competence:

After completing the course, the student should be able to use various methods for identifying and assessing aphasia, apraxia of speech, dysarthria and primary progressive aphasia, and swallowing disorders, and choose relevant mapping tools and analyze mapping results, implement and evaluate measures, as well as reflect on own practice and relate it to relevant theory.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and plenary discussions. The course has mandatory requirements. It is assumed that all students regularly use the current learning platform.

Practicum:

The course includes a minimum of 50 hours of external practicum. The practice includes people with aphasia as well as other acquired conditions that lead to language and speech difficulties, and/or swallowing difficulties.

Further on evaluation

Academic requirements to be assessed and to sit the exam: You must have attended 80% of the teaching, have passed the practicum and have had three mandatory work requirements approved. Only your own and your child's illness or the like are valid reasons for absence. In order to sit for the exam, you must.

Compulsory activity from previous semesters may be approved by the department.
