Course content

Research course over two years (four semesters), 24 credits.

PhD-course primarily for PhD-students with clinical projects in psychiatry, however, we also welcome applicants from other fields; e.g somatics.

Main topics in 4 semesters:

1. Literature search and research question.

- writing your introduction

2. Methods and design

3. Statistics and results

4. Manuscript writing

Individual guidance by a research guide, this must be arranged by the applicants themselves.

Learning outcome

A candidate who has completed his or her qualification should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge:

After completing IPH6051, the student should be able to:

• be in the forefront of knowledge within his/her academic field and masters the field´s philosophy of science and/or artistic issues and methods.
• evaluate the expediency and application of different methods and processes in research and scholarly and/or artistic development projects, including ethical issues in clinical research in psychiatry.
• contribute to the development of new knowledge, new theories, methods, interpretations and forms of documentation in the field.

Skills:

After completing IPH6051, the student should be able to:

• formulate problems, plan and carry out research and scholarly and/or artistic development work.
• carry out research and scholarly and/or artistic research work of a high international standard, including being able to evaluate relevant topics in clinical research.
• handle complex academic issues and challenge established knowledge and practice in the field.

General competence

After completing IPH6051, the student should be able to:

• identify new relevant ethical issues and carry out his/her research with scholarly integrity.
• manage complex interdisciplinary assignments and projects.
• communicate research and development work through recognized Norwegian and international channels, including to be able to write high-quality scientific articles
• participate in debates in the field in international forums.

Learning methods and activities

8-10 meetings each semester, 2-4 hours with some extended days. 1/3 lectures; 2/3 workshop/group discussions with student's own research projects.

The subject will only be offered if enough students register.

NEXT ADMISSION: Application deadline 1 April 2024. The next course starts autumn 2024 and ends spring 2026.

The course will not be arranged if less than 10 students are enrolled.

Specific conditions

Recommended previous knowledge

Recommended prerequisites: Basic research knowledge. 2 years of experience in a health profession (medical doctor, psychologist, nurse etc.) is strongly recommended. Some experience with SPSS.

Required previous knowledge

Admission requirements: Completed Master´s Degree or enrolled in a Master Program. The student must bring a plan for a clinical research project to be worked on during the course. Completed health profession (medical doctor, psychologist, nurse etc.)

Course materials

List of literature will be published in the beginning of the course.

Scientific papers will be distributed throughout the course.
