Course content
The course provides research-based introduction to, and practical training in effective communication of own research to important audiences in academic and non-academic contexts (such as journals, user groups, funding agencies, and the general public).
The focus is on the communication of own research.

KNOWLEDGE
The student
- has advanced knowledge of required conventions in scientific abstracts, articles, and grant applications
- is aware of principles of Open Access publishing at NTNU
- has knowledge of effective techniques in science journalism and outreach
SKILLS
The student
- can reflect critically on the significance of science communication in contemporary society
- can describe his/her own research in few sentences to both experts and non-experts (pitch)
- can write a scientific abstract
- can write a blog for a user group to engage interest in his/her own research
- can write a piece for the general public that effectively communicates his/her own research
- uses language and style appropriate for the target audience
Learning methods and activities
7 sessions (3 hours per session)
- Short lectures, groupwork, writing tasks
Compulsory assignments
- Drafts of three written course products
Further on evaluation
The examination assignment consists of a written assignment.
All compulsory activities must be approved before the student may take the exam.
Exam registration requires that class registration is approved in the same semester.
Compulsory activities from previous semester may be approved by the department.
It is not possible for students who have passed the exam in HFEL8000 to retake the exam in a semester where this course is not taught. Students who did not pass the exam, or who did not complete the exam due to illness may submit the exam in a semester where this course is not taught; however, they will not receive any supervision

Enrollment in a PhD-programme.
Required previous knowledge
This course is intended for PhD students in their 2nd or 3rd year, who have in-depth knowledge about their own project and research field.
