Course content

The work requirement is based on training from the first year of study.

Students will practice phlebotomy under the guidance of biomedical laboratory scientists in the hospital. This is part of socialization into the profession, where the student will use their knowledge and skills in meeting patients. Here, the students will also get to know how the laboratories handle blood samples. Practice skills in interaction, cross-cultural communication and understanding of the concept of health. Experienced application of laws, ethical theories and reflection models in practice. The student get to practice ethical sensitivity, and understand the responsibility as a healthcare professional. At the same time, apply the profession's ethical guidelines in reflections on practice.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

  • have knowledge of how health personnel collaborate interprofessionally
  • understands the importance of infection control and hygiene measures in connection with patient contact and medical laboratory work

Skills

  • have practiced communication skills in the meeting with the patient
  • have built up a basis for processing own experiences related to patient contact
  • have acquired the ability to reflect on one's own work
  • have learned the ability to adjust their own behavior under guidance
  • can practice basic infection control routines and aseptic work procedures in medical laboratory work

Competence

  • know the biomedical laboratory scientist's professional practice and role in the health service
  • understands the importance of infection control and hygiene measures in connection with patient contact and medical laboratory work
  • have an understanding of the importance of communication within the health service

Learning methods and activities

Guided practice in meeting with patients. Practice takes place with guidance from a biomedical laboratory scientist at Helse Møre og Romsdal. Conversation with supervisors after each practice session and if necessary.

  • Practical blood sampling

Further on evaluation

In order to get approved internship, it requires 100% attendance in hospital, two approved reflection notes and approval from an external supervisor in the hospital laboratory.

To get approved internship, the student must conduct phlebotomy.

If not approved internship the student must retake this in the next ordinary teaching semester for the course.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Biomedical Laboratory Science (BBIOING)

Required previous knowledge

Approved compulsory work in HBIOA1008 and HBIOA1009.
