About

About the course

Course content

The subject covers basic cell and molecular biology and techniques, genetics and cancer biology. Gene regulation, cell signalling and intracellular transport, cell cycle control and gene expression, DNA damage and repair, gene structure and function, the cytoskeleton, sexual reproduction and genetics, cell communities, cell differentiation, stem cells and cancer development.

Learning outcome

The student should;

  • be able to explain the relationship between genes and proteins
  • be able to explain how genes are regulated and repaired
  • be able to explain basic functions and mechanisms related to the cytoskeleton, transport, signal transduction/communication in and between cells
  • know of stemcells and their use
  • be able to explain fundamental principles of cancer development - know basic methods in molecular biology
  • be able to communicate cell- and molecularbiology to different target groups
  • be able to use their understanding of cellular processes towards other courses in their studies

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, group assignments and exercises. Total workload per student corresponds to approx. 200 hours. Of this, scheduled activities will amount to approx. 60 hours.

Compulsory assignments
