Course content
The course provides a basic introduction to the areas of hematology and haemostasis. It deals with basic theoretical knowledge about the development of blood cells, their function in the blood and, in addition, relevant disease theory such as anaemia, bleeding tendency and thrombosis. The students will get to practice their skills in blood sampling and analysis techniques by internal practical studies. In addition, the student must participate in external practical studies, primarily in the primary healthcare service. The course provides broad knowledge in analysis techniques, response assessment and quality control in the fields of hematology and haemostasis.
Learning outcome
Upon passed exam the student can:
- describe the main features of the normal hematopoiesis, morphology and function of blood cells
- explain the normal primary hemostasis, secondary hemostasis and fibrinolysis
- sampling, sample processing and pre-analytical conditions.
- perform and explain analytical methods and principles, manual and automated, which is used in diagnostic laboratories in hematology
- explain the main blood cell disorders, and defects in haemostasis
- evaluate and interpret the results of analyzes of normal and pathological blood samples in hematology and hemostasis
- explain important preanalytical factors in hematology and hemostasis
- know immunophenotyping as a method of investigating hematological conditions
Learning methods and activities
The expected number of working hours is 200, of which approx. 100 hours will be timetabled. Teaching will be a combination of lectures, laboratory course (internal practice) and external practical studies.
Pedagogical methods will be lectures, written works, laboratory course (internal practice) and external practical studies.
Compulsory assignments
- Laboratoriekurs
- Practical exam
- Assignments, hematology and hemostasis
- External practice studies
- Seminar
Further on evaluation
The subject is assessed with a final exam. In order to prepare for the exam, mandatory work requirements must be approved. This includes;
• approved laboratory course (internal practice)
• approved participation in the seminar
• approved practical exam
• approved assignments in hematology and haemostasis
• approved external practical studies with a reflection note
Approved compulsory work is valid for four semesters.
In the event of a reset exam, the form of assessment can be changed to an oral exam.
