Course content

The course focuses on French proficiency. The first weeks of teaching consist of an intensive seminar in French grammar. By actively participating in a writing workshop, students practice their skills in writing different types of texts. Focus is on the idiomatic usage of French and mechanisms for creating coherent texts. Throughout the semester students also work on improving their oral proficiency.

By attending FRA1010 you will also qualify to register for the DELF or DALF exams offered by the French Institute (Institut français) in Norway - diplomas to certify your French-language skills in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures. Intensive course in proficiency at the beginning of the semester (Pangstart). Writing workshop. Group sessions and discussions. Oral and written proficiency training.

The course is taught in French. 80% attendance is required in all teaching activities (lectures, writing workshop, group sessions etc.) as well as during the intensive course Pangstart at the beginning of the semester.

Obligatory assignments: 4 written assignments.

Approved obligatory assignments are valid for two semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester). All obligatory assignments must be completed in the same semester.

  • 80% attendance in all teaching activities

Further on evaluation

- Written exam in French, 2 hours. Mid-term exam that tests students in grammar. Counts as 40% of the final grade. All students with a valid exam registration may sit the mid-term exam.

- Written exam in French, 4 hours, at the end of the semester. The exam tests the students in text writing. Counts as 40% of the final grade. All obligatory assignments must be approved in order for the students to sit the written exam. In addition the students must meet the mandatory attendance requirement to sit the written exam.

- Oral exam in French, ca. 20 min. Counts as 20% of the final grade. All obligatory assignments must be approved in order for the students to sit the oral exam. In addition the students must meet the mandatory attendance requirement to sit the oral exam.

Each of the exams are graded separately, but only the final grade will be listed on official diplomas and transcripts of records from NTNU. Both written exams as well as the oral examination must receive the grade E or better in order for the student to receive a passing grade. If a student fails any of the exams, they must retake all of the exams. If a student resits a passed course, they must retake all of the exams.

Students who fail the mid-term exam or who cannot sit this exam due to documented illness will be allowed one further attempt at this exam before the end of the semester. Students may appeal the grade received on the mid-term exam within three weeks of the announcement of the exam results for the mid-term exam.

The exam must be answered in French. Information about which dictionaries, if any, you are allowed to consult during the written exam will be available in the reading list at the beginning of the semester.
