Course content

The course intends to give an introduction to the laws for heat and mass transport. Following an introduction to the principles of heat transfer, are these topics addressed: Stationary and non-stationary conduction, basic conditions and engineering contexts of convective heat transfer, phase change heat transfer (boiling/condensation), radiation and heat exchangers. Both analytical and numerical (computer-based) calculation methods are presented.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:The course will give the student knowledge of- basic heat transfer mechanisms (conduction, convection, radiation).- heat transport by conduction in solids for stationary and transient conditions.- heat transport by convection in duct flow and on external surfaces.- heat transfer by radiation.- convective mass transport.- friction and pressure loss in boundary layer flow in ducts and onexternal surfaces.- heat transfer by phase change (boiling/condensation).- boundary layer flow, laminar and turbulent flow.- heat exchangers: behavior and the most common designs.Skills:The course will enable the student to- calculate heat transfer by conduction, convection, and radiation forpractical situations.- analyze and calculate heat transport in composite systems withseveral heat transfer mechanisms involved.- calculate mass transport using a heat transfer analogy.- perform thermal-hydraulic calculations for heat exchangers.General competence:The course will provide the student with- basic competence included in other topics focusing on thermalenergy systems and processes.- skills to analyze and calculate heat transfer incomplex problems and heat engineering equipment

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, calculation exercises, computer exercises, and laboratory exercises. A minimum of 75 % of the calculation/computer exercises, as well as at least 1 of the laboratory exercises, has to be approved before the student can take the exam. It can be arranged approximately 2 mid-term tests, which will each be credited as 2 approved exercises.Compulsory laboratory work and exercises.

Examination arrangement: Written exam with a duration of 4 hours which constitutes 100 % of the assessment basis in the course. Grade: Letter A-F. Permitted aids at the examination: - All printed and hand-written support material is allowed. A specific basic calculator is allowed: Casio fx-82ES PLUS, Casio fx-82EX, Citizen SR-270X, Citizen SR-270X College, Hewlett Packard HP30S. - Other permitted calculators: Casio FX9860GII, Casio FXCG20, Texas Instrument 84 Plus. Re-sit exam in August. The re-sit examination might be changed from written to oral. All assessments must be repeated if redoing the course.
