Course content
The course focuses on issues that are central to English teachers who work with linguistically and culturally diverse students. It gives an overview of theoretical concepts related to the study of multilingualism, mostly with a focus on how to enact pedagogies that support multilingual development in the English language classroom.

Candidates who have passed this course
- can define multilingual acquisition and multilingualism and explain how it differs from first and second language acquisition/monolingualism and bilingualism
- have a knowledge of the benefits and challenges of multilingualism in education, in particular in educational contexts where English is taught as a third/additional language

- understand the complexity of multilingualism from both individual and social perspectives, and can identify and challenge language ideologies that may impact attitudes to multilingualism
- can apply theoretical concepts to forge classroom practices that are supportive of multilingual language development
- can select, modify, and create lesson plans and activities that draw on all linguistic resources of the learners, and connect these to the current English curriculum
Learning methods and activities
The course offers online teaching in a 13-week period. The course has online teaching units, which cover the various topics introduced in the course, and the course offers the opportunity for interaction and collaboration using different digital platforms. There are one or more online meetings over the course of the semester.
Obligatory activities cover various aspects of the course. Students are given feedback on obligatory activities and offered supervision.
Other
This is a fully online course. Information pertaining to access to the course is sent to the email address registered for the student. All communication throughout the run of the course will take place on the course site and learning platform, and NTNU's student email.
Students are required to follow all communication channels used by the course.
Students need access to an updated computer and a good internet connection. Students need access to the necessary equipment for online meetings and to record sound and video in an audiovisual presentation.

The obligatory assignments are assessed as pass/fail, and must be approved for the student to sit the final exam. The assignments are subject to revision based on feedback and will be submitted in the exam portfolio at the end of the semester.
The course concludes with a portfolio exam, consisting of 3 elements. The portfolio is given one overall assessment as passed or failed, and all elements must be assessed as meeting requirements for passing. This applies to postponed exams as well.
The exam must be answered in English.
