Course content
Prestressed concrete, material properties, prestressing methods. Design in ULS and SLS.
Prefabricated concrete structures, structural system and element types.
Design of foundations.
Learning outcome
The subject will give basic knowledge to principles and methods for design of prestressed concrete, prefabricated concrete structures and foundations.
The course has the following learning objectives:
Knowledge: The candidate shall have knowledge about:
- The prestressing steel material properties
- The structural effect of prestressing, and practical performance
- Design of prestressed concrete structures in the service and ultimate limit states
- General performance of concrete element structures
- Design of horizontal and vertical composed concrete element plates
- Design and performance of different types of precast concrete elements and foundations
Skills:
The candidate can:
- Design and verify that different types of prestressed concrete structures have sufficient capacity in ULS and SLS
- Design the most common types of precast concrete elements and the connections between them
- Design of columns and wall foundations.
General competence:
The candidate can:
- Understand how prestressed reinforcement work in different structures
- Understand the design basis of prestressed concrete, precast concrete elements and foundations
Sustainability competence: The course contributes to design of safe, economical and sustainable concrete structures. Design of durable structures with long service life. Choice of construction method to optimize designs and minimize the environmental impact from concrete.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures and obligatory excercises. The lectures and exercises are in English when students who do not speak Norwegian take the course. If the teaching is given in English the Examination papers will be given in English only. Students are free to choose Norwegian or English for written assessments.
