Course content

Subjects: The subject is divided into four parts: Bearing systems, statics, load calculations and simple design of timber and steel structures. I :Description of bearing systems, description of the basic elements such as trusses, beams, columns, discs, shells and methods for transfer of vertical and horizontal forces. II :Statics Methods for calculating deformatiopns, axial-,shearforces and bending moments for statically indetermined plane frames and trusses. III:Load calculation. IV :Simple design of timber and steel structures Load calculations and description of limit states. Design of beams and columns of timber.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: - The characteristics of the basic elements of building constructions. - How load on building structures is transferred from the roof to the ground. - The difference between staticcally determined and staticcally indeterminated constructions. - Calculation of deflection, bending moment, shear- and axial forces for beams, simple frames and trusses. Introduction to the theory of buckling. - Live loads for buildings, self-weight load, snow- and wind loads. - Limit states as Ultimate Limit State and Service Limit State. - Capacity calculations and calculation of deflection for beams of timber and steel. Skill: - Explain how loads are led to the foundation of simple building constructions. - Calculate deflection, bending moment, shear- and axial forces on beams, plane frames and for trusses. - Calculate characteristic values selfweight-, live-, snow- and windload according to the euro code. - Calculate corresponding design loads and load effects. - Calculate the capasity and rigidity of beams of timber and steel according to the eurocode. - Calculate the bucling capacity of centric loaded columns. General competence The candidate's competence can be summarized by the following items: - Identify static behaviour for building constructions. - Apply the eurocode to determine current loads and combinations of those. - Use the lectured knowledge in statics along with design rules to calculate the required capacity, rigidity and stability of plane structures of timber and steel. - Participate in professional discussions in the field of construction engineering and share their knowledge with others. - Evaluate methods and apply specialist literature in the field of this subject.
