Course content

Design of buildings and civil engineering structures, with focus on the structural elements and the structural systems and how the loads are carried. Examples of structures and their performance. Choice of an effective and economical structural system for the specific project, with choice of structural material, structural shapes for the components, bracing systems, foundations, and joints. Functioning of the various parts, and how to design them. Building rules and design standards. Design loads on structures, forces and displacements. Dimensioning of elements in wood, steel and concrete. Statically indeterminate structures, and design of elements combining two or more structural materials, i.e., composite action. Declaration of environmental properties of structures, design for re-use. Overview of the steps in the design and dimension of structures, quality control in engineering designs, verification and execution control.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and exercises.

Further on evaluation

Written exam - 3 hrs - 75% weight

Project - written report - 25%

Resit exam is held in August. Resit exam may change examination form from school exam to oral exam if the teacher decides this.

Resit exam can be implemented for some parts without all assessments need to be retaken. It is given the opportunity to complain about parts of evaluation in this course before all sub-evaluations have been completed.
