Course content
- Load calculation and load combinations
- Structural safety
- Design according to Eurocode
- Use of computer software in the structural design
Learning outcome
The course will provide the basis for more detailed and complex design issues and calculations in topics coming later in the study. The course contributes to the D-string of the study program, i.e. digitalization/ digital competence, through the use of FE software in connection with compulsory activities.
Knowledge
The candidate should:
- understand how to use FE in the design process
- has insight into current standards used in Europe
- get an introduction to the basis for finding the variable, permanent and time-dependent loads on structures
- be able to take into account safety considerations in general.
- know how to report and present obtained results from FE software
Skills
The candidate should be able to:
- apply her/his knowledge in loads, load combinations, and FEM in order to find utilization of cross-section for simple structures
- calculate and apply correctly permanent loads, snow loads and wind loads according to NS-EN standards.
- apply load combinations
- use FEM to calculate statically determined and indefinite constructions
- find reaction forces
- find forces and resultant forces
- find deformations
General competence
The candidate should:
- have knowledge on currently used design codes used in Europe
- have a good understanding of the relationship between the code recommendations/requirements and their practical application
- be able to verify results from FE software with hand calculations
- have a basic understanding of how structures behave under certain types of loads
- understand concepts of rigidity, stiffness and flexibility of structures
- have acquired a good basis and good understanding of capabilities and limitations when using FE softwares
Learning methods and activities
- Lectures and exercises in load calculation and application
- Exercises in FEM (Robot Structural Analysis)
Compulsory assignments
- Mandatory assignments
