Course content
Unit operations in biotechnological production processes: - fluid transport - separation processes - heat transport - cooling. Preservation of quality through unit operations.
Learning outcome
Knowledge - the students:
- have knowledge of key industrial biotechnological processes
- are able to describe unit operations and methods in biological production techniques
- know how various process parameters affect quality
Skills - the students:
- are able to plan sub-processes and put these together into a holistic process
- can assess and evaluate biotechnological production processes
- are able to assemble various unit operations to make sure that quality is preserved through the process
Competences - the students:
- have insight of the challenges that are applicable to ensure quality in relevant processes
- are able to identify new ideas and innovations within current biotechnological processes
- are able to communicate and share experiences with others who have background in the field
- understands the importance of process technology in the development of a sustainable society
Learning methods and activities
Educational methods: Lectures, calculation exercises, group assignments, laboratory exercises. Mandatory work requirements: Approved completion of laboratory courses and calculation exercises. In the compulsory laboratory journals and calculation exercises, parts of the tasks must be done in Excel in order to become familiar with the software.
Total workload per student corresponds to approx. 200 hours. Of this, scheduled activities will amount to approx. 80 hours.

Mandatory assignments must be approved for admission to the exam. 4 hours written exam.
Mandatory assignments are valid 4 semesters.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Biotechnology (427BT)
Required previous knowledge
HBIOA1002 Organic Chemistry or equivalent course. HBIOA1006 Instrumentel Analysis I, HBIOA2005 Instrumental analysis II or equivalent course. BTA2004 Basic biotechnology or equivalent course.
