Course content
The students will complete an independent project, based on a biomedical laboratory science problem. The project requires knowledge and skills from key areas of the study program. It includes; preparing a project plan, scientific literature search, methods for collecting and processing data, project reporting, research ethics for the health and social sciences with emphasis on informed consent, the research process phases - theory phase, problem formulation, design and method selection.
Parts of this is communicated the previous semester.
Learning outcome
Knowledge:
- on scientific methods for research- and development relevant to the field of biomedical laboratory science
- on risk assessment related to research- and developmental projects
- to understand the importance of knowledge of biomedical laboratory science, and for the existence of different problem-solving strategies and their limitations
Skills:
- can participate actively in planning and implementation of scientific work within the medical laboratory sciences, in accordance with ethical requirements and guidelines
- can develop an independent form of work, at the same time as the student develop the ability for cooperation and mutual dependence
- can understand and apply scientific methods for research- and development
- can document and communicate knowledge through oral and written presentation in the Norwegian language
Competence:
- ability for professional- and ethical reflection within biomedical laboratory science
- can account for and discuss professional issues within the biomedical laboratory sciences
- can, through research- and development projects, collaborate with other professionals on relevant issues
Learning methods and activities
The bachelor thesis is carried out as an independent group work with 3-4 students per group. The group size depends on the work load in the projects and exceptions on group sizes can be made based on discretion. Strategy for forming groups will vary year to year. Each group will receive both practical and theoretical supervision. There will be an oral presentation halfway through the assignment, which is mandatory for the group.
"Scientific Writing" course is mandatory. Before starting the practical work the group will write and sign a group agreement and write a risk assessment, problem statement and project plan which must be approved by supervisor. The final bachelor thesis is presented by the group and must be approved before submission.
Compulsory assignments
- Half way presentation of Project
- Presentation of completed Bachelor project
- Mandatory assignment
Further on evaluation
"Scientific Writing" course is mandatory and must be approved. The oral presentation halfway through the assignment, is also mandatory for the group. All students must participate and contribute at the presentation of the complete project towards the end of the project period. This presentation and each students contribution must be approved.
If the bachelor thesis is assessed to F, a new thesis must be submitted. Improvement or reworking is not sufficient The bachelor thesis can be presented again within the same theme based on the same empiricism/data.
If an artificial intelligence tool has been used, the work must include a description of which tool(s) were used and how. Direct use of AI-generated text must be clearly marked so it easily can be recognized and distinguished from student-generated text. This also applies for AI-generated images, codes etc.
