VIDEO
Norwegian on the Web 1 (NoW1) focuses on the use of familiar everyday expressions and basic vocabulary. In addition, NoW1 focuses on basic grammatical rules of inflection and word order. The content is specially designed for learners who study or work at NTNU, but NoW1 is open to all who want to learn Norwegian.
NoW1 has 10 chapters. The first six chapters have texts mainly focused on the characters Ken, Anna, Maria, Peter, Desta and Yuhang. The first four characters are students at NTNU in Trondheim. Yuhang studies in Ålesund whereas Desta works in Gjøvik.
The last four chapters have texts that deal more with different topics (like family and spare time).
The different chapters have a variation of texts, all with an audio. You can use the text audios in different ways, such as listening to the entire text or playing smaller pieces and repeating what you hear. You can also read a sentence first and listen to the audio afterwards, or you can record your own voice and compare it with the audio. It is also a good exercise to use the audio for larger or smaller dictations and compare with the text afterwards.
Tip! The audio control in most browsers allows you to adjust the playback speed. Try e.g. to turn down the speed to 75% to focus even more on the pronunciation.
Below the texts, you find vocabulary lists. You can click on each word/phrase to listen to the pronunciation.
Also use the Pronunciation and Listening exercises pages to improve your oral skills.
Below the texts, next to the vocabulary lists, you find Exercises which are suitable for the grammar and the vocabulary presented in the actual text or previous texts. It might be a good idea to read the Grammar before doing the exercises. On the Exercises page, all the chapter’s exercises are collected. Even if you have already done these before, it might be worth doing them all one more time as a repetition.
On the Extras page you find other material related to what you will learn in each chapter such as extra vocabulary lists.
Vocabulary
Learning vocabulary is very important in order to learn a new language, especially in the initial phase, and it requires a lot of practice and repetition. NoW1 is therefore presenting the vocabulary in several ways.
You will find simple lists both below each text (the Vocabulary tab) and on the Vocabulary list (a - å) page, as well as more detailed tables at the chapter level and grouped alphabetically on the Vocabulary tables page.
You can listen to all the vocabulary entries by clicking the blue links. In addition to this, we have also added flashcard sets.
