The deep sea - University museum
The Trondheim Fjord
There are species in the Trondheim Fjord so rare that we know almost nothing about them – and there are common species with ways of life that are more fascinating than you realise.
Exotic guests visit these waters – such as ocean sunfish, blue sharks and giant squid. A myriad of life hides in spectacular coral reefs, under the sandy seabed and in the depths of kelp forests. Many of the fjord’s secrets have yet to be revealed.
Perlen (the Pearl)
On the 16th of March in 1781, a storm raged in the Trondheim Fjord causing the merchant ship ‘Perlen’ to break free from its moorings. It blew towards land and sank outside Korsvika. Four people died and 57,000 bricks and 1144 barrels of various commodities went down with the ship. ‘Perlen’ is just one of many ships that have sunk in the Trondheim Fjord, but thanks to archaeological excavations in the 1970s, we know a lot about this wreck in particular.
The exhibition also shows beautiful pictures of some of the oldest living animals on the planet – the comb jellies.
