The Clinical Neurophysiology Research Group in Trondheim

The Clinical Neurophysiology Research Group consist of doctors and technicians at the Section of Clinical Neurophysiology, St. Olavs hospital, and researchers and PhD-students at the Department of Neuromedicine and Movement Science, NTNU. Our research and clinical activity are closely integrated, which provide a great environment for clinically relevant research and for implementing research into clinical practice. We collaborate with other medical specialities at St. Olavs hospital as well as other neurophysiological laboratories nationally. Our neurophysiological research is conducted at Section of Clinical Neurophysiology at St. Olavs hospital and at the high quality clinical neurophysiological lab at the NeXt Move core facility NTNU.

We have extensive experience with clinical neurophysiological examinations, including transcranial magnetic stimulation, EEG, evoked potentials, sleep studies, nerve conduction studies, electromyography, quantitative sensory testing and testing of the autonomic nervous system

Ongoing research projects:

Ongoing research projects:

•    The Migraine Physiology projects in Trondheim (MIGFYS): The MIGFYS-projects have investigated cortical excitability, visual, auditory and pain physiology and sleep in migraine. The projects have increased our understanding of migraine pathophysiology. The 4th and 5th MIGFYS-projects are now in their final stages and investigate the well known but unexplained relationship between migraine and sleep.
•    The E-NOMRS study: Clinical neurophysiology is of high importance in the diagnostic work-up of neurological diseases but require valid and accurate normal values. Better normal values are in high demand and are not easily transferable between laboratories. In this project, together with other clinical neurophysiological laboratories across Norway, we apply a novel scientific approach to create normal values based on historical data. This project aims to improve neurophysiological diagnostics in short and long term.
•    The Trøndelag Health Study (The HUNT Study): Members of the research group have worked with data on headache, pain and sleep disorders from the HUNT-studies. This scientific work includes sub-projects focusing on sleep disorders, peripheral neuropathies and headache.
•    GENEUP: A national study exploring the genetics of neuropathic pain. In this study clinical and neurophysiological data, in addition to genetic samples, are gather from patients with peripheral neuropathy.
•    Visopathy of Prematurity: In this project on visual function in children led by the research unit for eye diseases (Department of neuro medicine and movement science, NTNU), we asses visual function with electroretinography and visual evoked potentials.
•    GENEUP: A national study exploring the genetics of neuropathic pain. In this study clinical and neurophysiological data, in addition to genetic samples, are gather from patients with peripheral neuropathy.
•    “Radarsøvn”: An innovative project that aims to evaluate if a radar sensor can be used to monitor sleep.
•    The Bariatric Surgery Observation Study (BAROBS), subproject on polyneuropathy: The overall aim of the BAROBS study is to assess the general health status 10 to 15 years after gastric-bypass as treatment for severe obesity. In this project nerve conduction studies are also included to see if this patient group has an increased risk to develop polyneuropathy.
•    EEG in Epilepsi: The section of clinical neurophysiology at St. Olavs hospital has large archive with historical EEG data. In this project we utilize these data to describe EEG changes associated with epilepsy.
•    MUNE-ALS: Equipment intended to study axonal membrane properties (threshold tracking) is available in our lab. Modified software with capabilities to perform motor unit number count estimates (MUNE), is available for relevant projects.
•    Bipolar disorders and sleep. Polysomnographic studies performed before and after treating bipolar insomniacs are available in cooperation with Department of Psychiatry.
•    Postconcussion symptoms and posttraumatic headache: Pathophysiology and treatment options:  This project is lead by the Trondheim TBO group. The aim of the project is provide new knowledge that can aid in understanding the mechanisms driving persistent symptoms after mild head injuries, and guide development of efficacious treatment tailored to the individual patients. In this project, our research group contributes on neurophysiological assessment of the autonomous nervous system and pain thresholds.
