Siri sends orders for exam papers well in advance of the exam date. In the email, you will receive all relevant information about current deadlines, both for submission of approval lists and completion of the exam paper.
Completed and quality-assured exam sets are shared with Siri and Ida in Inspera. The deadline for this is 7 working days before the exam date. The exact deadline can be found in the email with the order of the exam paper from Siri.
Grading
When you have shared the exam set with the study administration in Inspera, it would be nice if you send an email and inform us about who will grade the exam. If we do not receive information about any co-graders, we assume that you, as the course coordinator, are grading alone. Due to financial reasons, we do not use external examiners for ordinary examinations.
Grading is also done in Inspera. Here you can read more about how to censor in Inspera. Assessments that has taken place outside of Inspera must still register a grade in a Grade registration test in Inspera.
Grading deadline
The deadline for exams, projects and bachelor's thesis is 3 weeks after the exam/submission date.
For master's theses, the censorship deadline is 3 months.
Internal grader
An internal grader is a grader who is employed at, or has another connection to, NTNU.
The internal grader is usually the course coordinator. You can have several internal co-graders.
PhD-candidates with duty work can be used as internal graders.
In the case of an oral exam, there must be at least two graders, but both can be internal.
External grader
An external grader is a grader who is not employed by NTNU. The person concerned cannot have been employed at NTNU during the last calendar year. The grader cannot have been associated with the course in any way. For example, a guest lecturer in a course cannot be an external grader for the same course he or she has taught.
Bachelor Theses, Master's Theses and all appeal assessments must have at least one external grader. In addition, all courses at NTNU must have an external grader at ordinary examinations at least once every three years. An external grader is not used for ordinary examinations besides this.
Appeals and Explanations
Explanations
Students have the right to request an explanation for grade no later than one week after the grade was announced. Explanations must normally be given within two weeks after the candidate has requested this. Please note that the appeal deadline is extended from the date the student receives the explanation.
Students can also demand an explanation at the oral exam, as long as the demand for explanation is made immediately after the grade has been communicated.
The explanation can be conveyed to the student either in writing via Inspera or orally. For most of our exams, we recommend to write and send the explanation directly to the student via Inspera.
Appeals
The student can complain about a grade up to three weeks after the announcement of the grade. If the student has asked for an explanation, they can complain within three weeks of receiving the explanation.
Students cannot complain about grades from Oral Exams, where it is not possible to verify the performance.
In the case of grading an appeal, there must be at least one external grader in the grading commission.
Ida manages appeals at the Department, and will contact you if an appeal arises in your course.
Master Agreement
All students who are going to write a master's thesis must complete and submit a master's agreement.
The main supervisor must approve the master agreement in Teams. An email notification is automatically generated when you have an agreement for approval.
It is important that you as supervisor approve the agreement as quickly as possible.
Supervisor
The main supervisor for the master's thesis must be a permanent academic employee or employed in a II position at IEL. The supervisor cannot be the grader for the master's thesis he/she has supervised. See a table over who can be a supervisor here.
Grading
The grading deadline for master's theses is 3 months from the date of submission. The grading committee for master's theses must consist of at least one external grader
When assessing a master's thesis, an assessment form must be used. The signed assessment form is sent to Siri when grading has been completed.
Here you can find templates for the assessment form in Norwegian and English.

Project Proposal
Proposals for Specialisation Projects are submitted to Siri every spring. You will receive a separate email about this with all the information you need.
Templates for project proposals can be found here in Norwegian and in English.
Specialisation Projects that are reserved in advance and are to be assigned to a named student must also be reported to Siri using the templates. But remember to fill in the student's name before you send Siri the project proposal, so we avoid other students also applying for reserved projects.
Please enter whether the project assignment is to be an individual work (1 student) or a collaboration (2 students).
Remember to state which research group the project belongs to, and enter the recommended specialisation course (TET45x5) that the student should enroll in. Any requirements for completed courses must also be stated.
A title and who will be the main supervisor must always be stated before a project proposal is sent to Siri for registration. If this information is missing, the project proposal will not be registered and will not be included in the students' project selection.
Grading
When assessing the specialisation project, an assessment form must be used. The signed assessment form is sent to Siri when the grading has been completed. The grading deadline is 3 weeks from the submission date.
Here you can find the templates for assessment form in Norwegian and in English.
All positions in the table can be co-supervisors to MSc and BSc students if they have competence in the scope of the thesis (no formal degree required)
Only personnel with PhD degree can be co-supervisors to PhDs and post docs.
For the MSc thesis main supervision IEL has to follow the NTNU requirements (Read the rules here), the main supervisor must be in a “permanent scientific position” with educational responsibility (as specified by Pro Dean of Eduaction Roger Midtstraum). That excludes researchers from the main supervisor role, but not the cosupervisor role. The main supervisor is responsible for the overall quality of supervision, as well as scientific quality assurance.
For the BSc thesis main supervision, the NTNU requirements are different than for the MSc thesis; any person with a BSc degree may be the main supervisor if the course responsible for the BSc thesis and the research groups see that person as competent in the topic of the BSc thesis.
Editing courses
Courses are created, terminated and edited via the online course planner Emner på Nett (EpN). This is a process that takes place annually from October to December. Courses are planned one academic year in advance.
Courses are quality assured via the study plan tool KASPER. Here, as course coordinator, you must write a course report and create a reference group.
User guidelines can be read here. If you lack access to your course in KASPER, or if your course should not have a course report this semester, please contact Ida for help.
Course Schedule
The timetable is set centrally by the Education Division at NTNU. They base their planning on information you, as the course coordinator, submit in Basic Data in the Time scheduling system (TP). Basic data is entered each semester for the following semester.
On the TP page, employees can book lecture rooms through the room booking system as soon as the lecture schedules are finalized. Regular meeting rooms are booked through the Outlook calendar.
