Mirarab's lab at UCSD develops computational methods for studying evolution and ecology. A question of particular interest is how low-coverage genome skims can be used to quantify biodiversity. This question connects to another question of interest to this team, that is, the quantification of microbiome using metagenomic data.
Role in DiverSea
In WP1, the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) team collaborates with the University of Copenhagen (UCPH) on k-mer-based genome-skimming techniques to improve species and population identification from mixed DNA samples. This endeavor aims to deliver highly accurate algorithms for biodiversity monitoring, substantially advancing our understanding of genetic diversity and enhancing metagenomic analysis.
