Polytechnic University of Marche

The Polytechnic University of Marche (UNIVPM) has twelve departments in five main research areas: Engineering, Environmental and Life Sciences, Agriculture, Economics and Medicine. The Department of Life and Environmental Sciences (DiSVA) and the Department of Materials, Environmental Sciences and Urban Planning (SIMAU) own highly qualified laboratories and infrastructures operating in the fields of marine ecology and biology, nature conservation, restoration of marine ecosystems, marine botany and zoology, environmental microbiology, and others. DISVA and SIMAU conduct studies in different ocean sectors, from coastal ecosystems to deep-sea trenches, from polar to tropical latitudes, and collaborate with many institutions worldwide in international research projects and networks of excellence.

Role in DiverSea

UNIVPM’s role in the DiverSea project is to assess the environmental status (sensu MSFD) and essential ecological variables of coastal areas of the Adriatic Sea (Mediterranean) through complementary approaches based on traditional methods (e.g., classical taxonomy) and innovative technologies based on unmanned aerial and environmental DNA. In addition, experiments in the field and laboratory will be performed to assess the reliability, gaps and drawbacks of the eDNA-based approach.
