National and Kapodistrian University of Athens
The University of Athens (NKUA) is the oldest higher education institution in modern Greece and contributes significantly to the educational and research work of the country. It is divided into 9 faculties and 42 academic departments and sectors. Currently, more than 40,000 undergraduate students and more than 25,000 postgraduate and PhD students are registered. The Sector of Ecology & Taxonomy of the School of Biology that is involved in DiverSea is engaged in research on the biodiversity of multiple biocommunities from plants and larger animals to microbes, on climate change effects on ecosystem health, on taxonomy and biogeography
Role in DiverSea
The role of University of Athens on the project involves sampling in multi-stressed marine environments of the Hellenic Volcanic Arc (HVA). Their aim is to collect eDNA, microbial biodiversity data, and satellite data from several sampling points across the HVA that receive anthropogenic and natural pressures to understand the responses of microbial communities that play important roles to ecosystem processes, and to reveal novel taxonomic and functional diversity.
