The Big Data for Smart Society Institute (GATE)

The Big Data for Smart Society Institute (GATE), at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, is the first dedicated Big Data and AI Centre of Excellence in Eastern Europe.  Having the vision to enable a Data-Driven Smart Society, GATE is facilitating digital transformation by leveraging the opportunities that Big Data and AI technologies create and by accelerating their impact across society. GATE performs research and creates innovations in Future Cities, Digital Health, Smart Industry and Intelligent Government. The research focus is on Explainable AI, Federated Machine Learning, Semantic Interoperability, Data Spaces, Urban Digital Twins. By providing advanced infrastructure - platform, data, services and testing and experimentation facilities, GATE is a recognizable Data Space and an AI sandbox with credible potential. 

Role in DiverSea

GATE leads WP2, which has an objective of gathering available data from DiverSea partners, including new data to be generated in the field studies, and creating the DiverSEA Data Space. GATE also drives the provisioning of a holistic conceptual domain data model and reusable and compatible data and knowledge that ensures Data Space integration and interoperability with EMODnet and other EU systems and platforms. The centre is also involved in data analysis in WP3 and cross factorial analysis in WP4.
