About natural hazards

Natural Hazards aims to improve the understanding, prediction, monitoring, and mitigation of natural hazards.

Natural hazards is a field that requires broad knowledge. To understand and manage natural hazards, we need insight into how the Earth's surface changes and the ability to map, monitor, and create models. In addition, we need engineers who can build and maintain critical infrastructure such as roads, railways, ports, and airports. Physical planning and preparedness are also essential, as well as the ability to strengthen societal resilience at all levels, from individuals to the national level.

Natural Hazards brings together experts in the field to tackle these challenges from an interdisciplinary perspective. Our experts work closely with government and industry to find solutions together.

Background

Norway has a high risk of floods, landslides, and natural hazards in general:

  • Landscapes with steep and deep valleys and fjords
  • Regions with marine clays and quick clay zones
  • Cold winters with high precipitation, wind, and changing temperatures
  • Heavy rainstorms and episodes of snowmelt
  • Low-lying soft coastlines exposed to storm surges and increasingly, sea-level rise.
  • Soft sediments on the continental shelf
  • Numerous glaciers with glacial lakes
