Bjørn Syvert Frengstad

About

I am a professor of engineering geology with an emphasis on soil, hydrogeology and ground source heating. Since 2020, I have been research group leader for Engineering Geology and Rock Mechanics and from 2024 I am leader of the Natural Hazards Group under NTNU's strategic reseach area Civil Security. Before I came to NTNU in 2017, I have worked for 19 years as a researcher at the Geological Survey of Norway, including five years as head of the Groundwater Team. From 1990 to 1995 I was a scientific assistant and amanuensis at NTH and from 1998 to 2001 I was a research fellow at NTNU.

Research

My research and project experience is within a relatively broad area of applied geology, including:-
- Hydrogeology in sediments and rocks
- Quaternary geology on land and on the shelf, as well as in Svalbard
- Environmental geochemical mapping of soil and groundwater on a regional and local scale.
- Ground-source heating and underground thermal energy storage
- Groundwater for water supply, mineral water and energy purposes
- Assessment of groundwater quality, including trace elements and radioactive elements
- Baseline studies, long monitoring series and statistical analysis
- Geochemical processes in soil and groundwater
- Slope stability

Bømoen plussbygd

The project is carried out in Voss Herad in a former military area, Bømoen, c. 3.5 km from the center of Voss. Central is joint management and use of groundwater for drinking water and energy, building materials, as well as land and natural resources.

ORMEL 2 Optimal ressursutnyttelse av grunnvann til oppvarming og kjøling i Melhus kommune

Through ORMEL2, we have further developed how groundwater-based heating should be operated and maintained based on studies of water chemistry and microbiological conditions.

EnerGizerS CO2-Enhanced Geothermal Systems for Climate Neutral Energy Supply

The project aims to analyze the effectiveness of unconventional geothermal systems (EGS -Enhanced Geothermal System) using CO2 as working fluid - one installation located in Poland, and one in Norway.
