Ideal area solutions

Together with the project organization and an architect, the working group had the task of creating a function description presenting an ideal area solution when it comes to storage facilities, exhibition areas and reception. This without taking the current organization and building stock into account, and without suggesting concrete solutions. The function description is the starting point for the further process on renewal of the museum. The project was established in the spring of 2018, and the function description was created during the autumn.

Need for upgrade

For many years there has been a need for new depositories for the museum's collections. Today, there are old, partly listed and poorly flexible buildings that house the growing collections. The modernization of the depositories will include a technical upgrade and an increase in capacity. There is also a need for flexible and contemporary exhibition spaces that can facilitate more knowledge transfer, dialogue and interaction with the population. The Gunnerus Library is a partner in the modernization of the University Museum, and a common reception for the museum and the library is one of the possibilities looked in to.

Room program and sketches

In the first half of 2019, the working group will prepare a room program and sketches presenting solutions for rebuilding and possibly new buildings as well. NTNU has received a decision from the Government on possible future funding for up to 92 000 square metres new buildings and the modernization of up to 45 000 square metres of existing areas at NTNU. A part of he square metres for modernization of existing areas is dedicated to rebuilding the despositories for the University Museum. When it comes to the areas for exhibition, NTNU will do its utmost to finance this within the university’s regular funding.
