Students about campus

Favourite place on campus? Wishes for the campus of the future? Advice for the campus developers? We have asked a number of student what they mean.

Exchange student from Litauen, Urban Ecological Planning.

Where is your favourite place at the campus on Gløshaugen - and why?

– My favourite place in Gløshaugen is the area outside Hangaren with tables and chairs. One of the first memories from NTNU was when we sat there with our cohort.

How do you see the campus of the future?

– I imagine that the merging of both campuses would be hectic in the beginning with even higher number of students and staff roaming Gløshaugen, but later on the higher density should help the sustainable development of the campus and the city.

What advice do you have for those who are developing the campus of the future today?

– Don't forget student and staff minorities when asking about the needs of NTNU's community.

Where is your favourite place on campus - and why?

– My favourite place at the campus Gløshaugen is Sit canteen in Realfagbygget. This is because the canteen has a good offer and the room is great to eat in. However, there should be more seats. I’m usually at  Elgeseter, so I haven’t explored Gløshaugen that much.

How do you see the campus of the future?

– I imagine a modern buildingthat is characterized by quality and that the campus will be almost like a small community, but with “proximity” to the center of Trondheim.

What advice do you have for those who are developing the campus of the future today?

– Build big enough so that we avoid space problems as I experience today’s campus. Provide enough reading areas, group rooms and dining areas.

Studying for Master's Degree in Physical Planning,The Faculty of Architecture and Design.

Where is your favourite place on campus - and why?

– My favourite place on campus is Cafe-Sito Stripa, because here I always buy my favourite brewed coffee.

How do you see the campus of the future?

– The campus of the future will be a multifunctional smart city with opportunities for you to live there, shop there and have leisure activities there all weekdays, including regular teaching.

What advice do you have for those who are developing the campus of the future today?

– My advice is that it is important to involve those who are going to use the campus, which are the students.

Where is your favourite place on campus - and why?

– The Architecture Library. Here you can sit around tables and work with others, but also sit in a sheltered cubicle and work alone. Due to its location on Stripa, there are students from all possible disciplines who use the room. It is also a short distance to the canteen and kiosk. I am also very fond of looking at the exhibitions both inside the library and right outside.

How do you see the campus of the future?

– I hope and believe in more activity even after regular working hours. Be it professional events, but also open concerts and exhibitions (which come from the fact that the artistic disciplines move here). I also hope for a place with longer opening hours than today’s food offerings. The fact that it is attractive to stay on campus even after regular working hours, I think can help with reading-space issues that I feel are present today. I also hope for more natural meeting places and attractive recreational areas both inside and out.

What advice do you have for those who are developing the campus of the future today?

– I hope that the developers have the power to implement the “urban” quality principle. “A living campus” is widely used and it can feel like a slightly floating expression. But various events, conservation of attractive green areas, better access to campus in the evening and at the weekend, as well as the admission of other population groups than just students (lik moving the Cultral School together with the Department of Music) can contribute to this. The academic is already in place, so the physical surroundings should contribute to increased well-being among the students and the employees.

Preparatory Course with aim for computer engineering come fall.

Where is your favourite place on campus - and why?

– I don’t really have a special favourite place, but fint it fun that there is so much going on at Stripa.

How do you see the campus of the future?

– I envision greater diversity, with many different fields of study and students gathered in a smaller place than we are used to from before. Perhaps it will also be easier with interdisciplinary projects if the co-location of the campuses is successful.

What advice do you have for those who are developing the campus of the future today?

– Nothing that I can think of. Will be exciting to see how i develops.

Karl Andre Lerum Lund

Karl Andre Lerum Lund (23)

Studying Mechanical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering.

Where is your favourite place on campus - and why?

– My favourite place is on the front of the main building. Here one has a view of the city center and over the beautiful green areas. This is the main “entrance” to the Gløshaugen campus.

How do you see the campus of the future?

– The future campus has integrated itself naturally into and around the existing buildings and become an urban campus. There is a lot of activity also in the evenings and in the weekend after opening up for more cooperation with external parties. There is also more interdisciplinary collabotion across the fields of study.

What advice do you have for those who are developing the campus of the future today?

– Include students and employees at the various institutes. Here one can get a lot of information and input one would not otherwise think of. Also include neighbours who are adjecent to Gløshaugen to avoid conflict.
