This is how NTNU want to locate academic communities in a unified campus in Trondheim
The Rector has decided a recommendation on the overall placement of the academic clusters in a unified campus in Trondheim. The Rector’s decision is in line with Option C, described by the Committee for location of academic functions.
Written by: Christel Vindenes
The decision includes location of academic functions, principles for unifying and placement, as well as what is to be further investigated. The recommendation is at an overall level and provides guidelines for how NTNU will work on a unified campus in the Gløshaugen area. The Rector’s decision is NTNU’s recommendation on location of academic functions within the Ministry of Education’s framework for a unified campus.
Localization as described in Option C
- Location of the HumSam-cluster in the south-eastern part of Gløshaugplatået:
The inputs from the consultation give broad support to the HumSam-cluster being placed as described in Option C in the committee’s report on location of academic functions.
- The KAMD-cluster is placed in the north along Høyskolebakken:
Through the project development, together with the relevant academic environments, NTNU need to consider how KAMD can be realized along Høyskolebakken if political treatment of the planning programme and later regulation of this area limits the area capacity here.
- Economy cluster in the south-west with an Innovation center.
- Health and social work on Øya.
- Teachers education on Kalvskinnet.
Principles for a unified campus
It is recommended that further work on unifying campus is done according to the following guidelines:
- The eight main academic clusters, the subsidiarity principle (sub-report 2 p. 18, sub-report 3 p. 8) and the geographical axes where the main structure of Gløshaugen is sought as far as possible to be preserved.
The main clusters are per. today's date;
- HumSam
- Healt and social work
- Teachers education
- KAMD
- Economy
- Natural science
- Information technology and electrical engineering including mathematics
- Engineering
- An increase in hub functions and learning areas is sought to be established along the central axis of Gløshaugen to ensure variation in space and functions. There will also be learning areas connected to the academic communities in local hubs.
To be investigated further
The following aspects need to be further explored:
- Student housing on campus; scope and location.
- Content and scope of the Innovation center and the connection with other innovation infrastructure on campus. Space for partners in the academic clusters, including SINTEF and Sit.
- Alternative localization for the sports building at Dragvoll.
- Spaces for student welfare, student democracy and student volunteerism.
- Public administration: Structure and location.
- Special areas that are directly affected by NTNU’s unified campus will be considered regarding operation of experimental infrastructure and activities, both during the construction period and after new buildings have been put into use.

About the recommendation
The recommendation is based on reports and the Committee for location of academic functions proposals, together with the comments from the consultation and the committee’s sub-report 3, as well as discussion in SESAM, the management and the board. The recommendation is also based on political decisions and NTNU’s strategy.
Specific localization of academic environments on areas and in buildings has not been investigated in detail. It will vary over time and with the development of the project and the business in general. The recommendation on placement will therefore be at the overall level, as a management tool and a guide for further prioritization and work on unifying campus in Trondheim.
