About the course

Course content

The course consists of two equal parts: theoretical and practical/computational. The theoretical part of the course introduces the participants to numerical mathematics and prepares them for the scientific computing part. The latter consists of three compulsory projects originating from physics, biophysics and mathematics. Potential topics covered by the course are methods for evaluating integrals, solving systems of differential equations, linear and non-linear equations, and interpolation.

Learning outcome

A student successfully meeting all the learning objectives of this course will be able to: (1) mathematically formulate specific problems from physics and biophysics; (2) explain and use specific numerical methods to solve these problems; (3) implement certain numerical algorithms on a computer; (4) critically assess the obtained numerical results; (5) communicate the findings in a form of a report.

There will be three compulsory projects. These will be evaluated and count towards the total grade of the portfolio assessment in the course. Letter grades are only given on the portfolio assessment in its entirety. There will be a digital exam at the end of the semester. The re-take examination (in August) may be changed from written to oral.

In the case that the student receives an F/Fail as a final grade after both ordinary and re-sit exam, then the student must retake the course in its entirety. Submitted work that counts towards the final grade will also have to be retaken. For more information about grading and evaluation. see «Teaching methods and activities».
