About

About the course

Course content

Organic chemistry laboratory, advanced organic synthesis, lab safety, use of SciFinder program, mounting of lab equipment, reaction under inert atmosphere, extraction, crystallisation, distillation, column chromatography, the use of rotavapor, NMR analysis, thin layer chromatography, IR-spectroscopy, UV-spectroscopy, optical rotation, literature investigations, reporting.

Learning outcome

The student should upon completion of the course: (i) make a hazard evaluation of the chemistry based on material safety datasheets and the lab recipe, (ii) perform reactions of different kinds also under water free/inert conditions, (iii) find relevant literature using SciFinder, (iv) analyse the reaction progress of a reaction, (v) interpretate spectroscopic and analytical data of various kinds, (vi) be able to purify an organic compound using extraction, crystallisation, distillation and column chromatography and (vii) be able to report the findings, evaluate possible errors and pinpoint improvement potentials.

Learning methods and activities

Laboratory (160 hours). As a part of the compulsary laboratory course is a compulsary HSE lecture. The HSE lecture will be given within the first two weeks of the semester. Students that miss this HSE lecture will not get access to the laboratory course. An introduction course in literature search will be given. English teaching by request.

Specific conditions

Required previous knowledge

Knowledge corresponding to TKJ4102/TKJ4100/KJ1020, TKJ4150 and KJ2022 or similar courses. If TKJ4150 is not already passed, it must be taken the same semester as TKJ4130.

Admission to the course is restricted to students admitted to the program Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (MTKJ), 4th year with specialization in organic chemistry, Bachelor in Chemistry with specialisation in Organic chemistry, and the propram Natural Science Teacher Education with focus on organic chemistry.
