About
About the course
Course content
Today´s technological systems are designed and constructed with increasing levels of complexity and autonomy making it difficult to ensure safety in operation. This course addresses fundamental concepts and methods for developing, verifying, and maintaining safety in critical systems. Physical systems are the main focus, but human and organizational factors are also covered.
Learning outcome
Knowledge: After having completed the course, the students should be able to understand system safety theory and utilize systems engineering and management methods for achieving safe operation of technical systems. They should know state-of-the-art and current challenges in the research area, and adjust this knowledge to their PhD-projects.
Skills: The student should:
-Understand the content of essential concepts and be able to utilize methods in system safety theory and systems engineering to analyze and model safe and sustainable technological systems. The central focus will be on systems with autonomous functionality, if relevant for the students participating in the course.
-Understand and analyze advanced risk and maintenance management, including its integration and implementation.
-Develop safety and maintenance indicators for controlling operational safety performance.
General competence:
-The students should be be able to write a course paper which forms the basis for a scientific conference article or journal article relevant for the candidate´s PhD-thesis. They should also be able to present and discuss challenges and ideas for further research in the field.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, group discussions, presentations, scientific writing, and self study. Minimum 3 students must register for the course to be taught. To pass the course a score of at least 70 percent is required. The course will be taught in English if English speaking students take the course.
