About the course

Course content

This course deals with a selection of topics within the theory of science that will contribute to the understanding of research in science education. Relevant research methods, qualitative as well as quantitative, their suitability and limitations are discussed. This course will prepare the students for their work with research in science education, where the coherence between themes, research topics, research questions and application of relevant theories and methods are crucial. Ethical considerations in research is an integrated part of this course. Insight and training in the writing of academic texts where emphasis is put on the structure of the text, the precision in writing and the correct use of literature, will also be addressed.

  • can develop researchable questions that are relevant within science education
  • can plan and clarify how to collect and analyse research data
  • can analyse and critically use sources of information such as literature and data and use them to structure and formulate scientific reasoning
  • can design a master project and justify the choice of methods suggested
  • can take heed of ethical aspecs of planning of research

GENERAL COMPETENCE

The student

  • can elucidate and clarify methodological choices related to a selected research focus
  • can analyse relevant issues related to science education in school and other dissemination of science
  • can disseminate results from an individual work and masters the language and genres of science education

Learning methods and activities

Teaching components will include lectures, individual and group work on taks, discussions and other relevant collaboration. Students are expected to actively participate in the teaching activities and thus contribute to the course.
