PURPEST (Plant pest prevention through technology-guided monitoring and site-specific control)

The EU prioritizes establishment of healthy and environment-friendly food systems threatened by increasing pest invasions. The main objective of PurPest is to control serious plant pests during import and to manage them in the field by developing a unique concept enabling pest detection in a timely and non-invasive manner. This sensor concept is based on identification of pest-specific volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by host plants invaded by one or several pests. The compounds induced by attack from the noctuid moth, Helicoverpa armigera, will be one of the VOC signatures identified. Deterring signals released by eggs and/or larvae of this species, i.e., oviposition deterrents (ODs), are also relevant stimuli for development of the electronic nose.
The Chemosenory lab at NTNI is one of the partners within a multidisciplinary consortium with expertise from 10 countries, including 7 universities, 5 research institutes, 4 SMEs and 2 governmental agencies. The PI is Senior researcher Andrea Ficke, Norwegian Institute for Bioeconomy (NIBIO), and the project period is 01.01.2023-01.01.2027.
