By now, we all know that information technology plays an essential role in how society will be able to handle global sustainability challenges. As IT educators, we also know that we need to integrate sustainability into IT education in a meaningful, pedagogically sound way.

The question is: How? How can we best prepare our students to become discipline experts, cross-disciplinary team workers, change agents and problem solvers capable of taking on the complex tasks out there?

This is the question to be addressed in the Excited workshop on IT education for sustainability, arranged in conjunction with NIKT2021 in Trondheim.

The program includes a panel session with introductory presentations. We are very fortunate to have a panel with the follwing experts from industry, public sector and academia:

  • Deepti Mishra, Assoc. professor, NTNU
  • Simen Sommerfeldt, Chief Technology Officer, Bouvet ASA
  • Maja van der Velden, Professor, UiO

We will also have a hands-on workshop session focused on what we as IT educators and as a community of educators across institutions should focus on in the years to come in the area of sustainability in IT education. For instance, what is the dream scenario? Which collaborative activities and arenas for knowledge building and experience exchange could be useful? What opportunities and possible hindrances should be considered?

Our goal for the workshop is to engage the community of IT educators in discussion, experience sharing and network building related to the successful transformation of courses and study programs to meet the needs for sustainability competence.

By participating in the workshop, you will gain an understanding of concepts connected to sustainability in connection to IT education, including real-world cases that can inspire your own teaching.

The workshop is intended for anyone involved in IT education.

The workshop is organized and sponsored by Excited Centre of Excellent IT Education https://www.ntnu.edu/excited
