Improving synapse-visualization technology
Career opportunities
The field of Neuroscience is multidisiplinary and rapidly developing. The MSc in Neuroscience at NTNU offers both a basic introduction to this research area as well as training in research methodology. The master's programme is suitable for students motivated towards research or teaching in neuroscience in particular, or the natural sciences in general. The introduction to experimental and analytical methods is relevant to other academic areas as well.
Completion of the MSc degree qualifies for study at the PhD level.

Improving synapse-visualization technology
Name: Donkyun Lim
Study Programme: Master of Science in Neuroscience, completed in 2018
Profession: Researcher, Korea Institute of Science and Technology
"While you are students, focus on yourself to improve based on your failures"

What do you do at work?
I work at Dr. Jinhyun Kim's lab and we are interested in functional connectomics, based on the synapse-visualization technology; mGRASP. My major task is to improve the mGRASP technology to better the resolution. Additionally, I am in charge of overall molecular work and behavioural analysis in the lab.
What is the best thing about your job?
I achieve professional expertise as a researcher in this position. during more than two years of research experience, I have broadened my scope to current research in neuroscience and this has polished my research interest as well. It has motivated me to pursue the studies in a future PhD program.
How did you get this job?
After my graduation I wanted to explore diverse research fields in neuroscience, and I simply sent e-mails to potential principal investigators with my CV and research interests. I believe my research background at Kavli institute made it much easier than I worried.
How do you use skills and knowledge earned from your studies in your job?
Obviously, the basic knowledge and research techniques that I learned during the program were helpful to understand each research project. On top of that, I had many chances to take seminars from different research fields in the Kavli Institute. This guided me to structure a plan according to my scientific curiosity.
Did you work during your studies with something that is
relevant for your job today?
Yes, I worked as an animal technician at Kavli Institute with professional experts, where I learned how animal treatment is very important to get reliable data on behaviour analysis. This experience supports my current research in behaviour tests.
What is your best career advice for our current students?
Student life is the best timing to make failures! Your failures will turn into your best properties for your future career. While you are students, focus on yourself to improve based on your failures. However, it doesn't mean collecting F's in your transcripts. I am still suffering from my bad grades.
