Norwegian Biometrics Laboratory at NTNU won the best paper award at the 14th Norwegian Information Security Conference hosted by the NTNU Department of Computer Science in Trondheim, Norway. NISK aims to be the principal annual research venue in Norway for presenting and discussing developments in ICT security and privacy. The research article authored by NBL members - Marcel Grimmer, Haoyu Zhang, Prof. Raghavendra Ramachandra, Assoc. Prof. Kiran Raja and Prof. Christoph Busch with the title "Generation of Non-Deterministic Synthetic Face Datasets Guided by Identity Priors" proposes a new method for generating synthetic face images helpful in benchmarking the biometric performance of face recognition systems. The main motivation of replacing bona fide images with synthetic samples is to reduce privacy risks and demographic biases caused by unbalanced databases. The research article addresses these issues, indicating that the biometric quality of synthetic samples is similar to bona fide data, and mated samples can be created by changing facial attributes in a non-deterministic manner.
