The application and project management process

The application and project management process

Developing and writing a good proposal takes time! Here are the different stages of applying for and managing a project.

The application process

  • Start by developing your idea with your colleagues.
  • Discuss your project idea with your immediate leader.
  • Identify suitable funding opportunities - the Grants Office website and ResearchConnect can be a good place to start!
  • Stay up to date on courses and reading days delivered by the Grants Office and the Norwegian Research Council.
  • Get approval from your department leader to apply for funding.
  • If you want someone to review your proposal, contact the Grants Office via one of the expression of interest procedures.
  • All externally funded projects must have a detailed a budget. When developing the budget contact the project economist at your department as early as possible. The department may have internal deadlines.
  • Remember to factor in the time it takes to hire (i.e. PhDs, postdocs, researchers etc.) when planning your project start-dates.
  • Complete and submit the BOA checklist before submitting your application.
  • We keep a database of proposals and evaluation summary reports for documentation and learning purposes. Once you have applied, please send the following to the grants office:
    • Submitted proposals
    • Evaluation summary reports

NOTE: Hiring of personnel can be lengthy so we recommend to start the process as soon as possible.

  • The project leader is responsible for the scientific and economic management of the project:
    • Distribute information to all involved in the project
    • Report any changes to the project to the relevant administrative support and apply for extensions if necessary
  • Submit scientific and potentially financial reporting. The different funding sources have different requirements for what type of reporting is needed and to what extent.
  • Resolve any outstanding accounting.
