Specialization Courses

– Ultrasound technology

Subjects for specialisation course (7.5 credits total), see also the list of master thesis and project topics.

TTK10 Signal processing in ultrasound imaging (3.75 credits) Hans Torp
TTK11  Wave propagation and signal processing in relation to SURF imaging (3.75 credits) Bjørn Angelsen
TTK13 Ultrasound instrumentation (3.75 credits) Thomas Grønli

Some of the courses are described below

TTK10: Signal processing in ultrasound imaging

Content: The subject presents some selected techniques in digital signal processing used in ultrasound imaging. Examples: Complex demodulation, filter design, sampling and interpolation, detection theory and parameter estimation. The techniques are used on
simulated/experimental ultrasound data by programming in Matlab.

Form of instruction: PBL (problem based learning). Weekly study groups with advice where the students will solve a problem by literature study and Matlab programming. It will be discussed how to approach the problem, and established one or more learning objectives. The students will then solve the problem independently. At the beginning of the next meeting the learning objectives and the solution of the problem is presented, before starting on the next exercise.

TTK11 Wave propagation and signal processing in relation to SURF imaging

Content: Theory and simulation methods for propagation of dual band pulses (SURF pulses) in nonlinear, heterogeneous tissues. Signal models and signal processing for suppression of multiple scattering noise and imaging of micro bubble contrast agents and micro-calcifications.

Form of instruction: Self study and colloquia. Weekly meeting with supervisor.

TTK13: Ultrasound Instrumentation

Content: The subject presents the central parts of ultrasound scanner technology. Such as the analog front end, the transducer, beamformer, B-mode-processing, Doppler-processing. The structure of the ultrasound scanner as a real time instrument is also covered.

Form of instruction: Weekly study groups with supervision where the students will solve a problem by literature study or laboratory exercise.
