Research Project

Responsible AI for Citizen Safety in Future Smart Cities, AI4Citizens

Introduction

Recently, artificial intelligence (AI) has resulted in the implementation of smart solutions in the field of crime prevention and efficiency. Despite these developments, there are currently two important weaknesses in the current technological solutions: the intrusion of privacy and the aversion of public concerning its implementation and potential (ab)use.

About the project

About the project

With an interdisciplinary approach, AI4citizens aims to address the societal and technological security challenges connected to surveillance technologies, while at the same time addressing the ethical, societal and privacy related issues. The perspectives of citizens must be taken into account when creating responsible AI tools. This may on the one hand help address the algorithmic biases that technology has against certain citizen groups (i.e. minorities, less representative groups etc.), on the other to overcome biases that citizens have against smart technologies of surveillance.

Main focus areas

1. Anonymization of Monitoring Data for AI Training and Information Distribution

2. Anonymous Crowd Monitoring for Event Detection

3. Contextual Video Object Search for Crime Prevention & Investigation

4. Societal Impact and Ethical Implications of Anonymized Surveillance
