About the project

The project Russian-Norwegian Research-based education in Cold Regions Engineering (RuNoCORE) is sponsored by Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation in Education.

The project is a cooperation between Norwegian University of Science and Technolgy (NTNU) department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU) department of Geocryology.

Summary

The northern part of Europe is becoming more important from an economical standpoint. However, to develop this region in a sustainable way it is necessary for engineers to improve understanding of the mechanics associated to frost.
Moscow State University and NTNU has long history of research cooperation on Arctic and cold region engineering that could give better education to students at both universities. Through this cooperation, we have better understanding about culture and traditions that should be spread to students. The project manager has a PhD-education from MSU and has now been working for six years in Norway in SINTEF and NTNU.
The main activities in the project is to invite Norwegian students to fieldwork in northern part of Russia and to arrange an intensive course in both countries for students from Russia and Norway. The courses will give a very good basis to work as an engineer in cold climate. A significant part are set aside for student scholarships and travel expenses. We will build on the strong foundation of research and make this available for more students.
To facilitate student mobility we will involve administrative staff to give them better understanding of the two systems and to solve administrative hindrances.
The topic for this application is priorotized at both universities involved and the governmental partners. This project will be essential to establish a good platform for student mobility and when this is up and running it will be easier to find funding for future student mobility and cooperation.
