Musicology - Master's Programme
The master's programme in Musicology aims to develop the students' knowledge and comprehension of musical diversity and the various historical and modern phenomena with which music is affiliated.
The aim of the programme of study is to enable students to strengthen their ability to critically acquire traditional and contemporary musicological theories within music history, ethnomusicology and music theory.
Furthermore, students are given individual instruction in their principal instrument as well as group instruction in courses embracing aural training, improvisation and choral conducting in order to strengthen their practical proficiency.
Students may suggest a topic for their master's thesis, but are recommended to choose projects within areas where the Department of Music has special research competence, such as:
- Ethnomusicology and world music
- Western music history
- Music theory
- Music analysis
- Composition
- Film music
- Music sociology
- Music psychology
The master’s programme in musicology includes music history, ethnomusicology, music theory and other disciplines within musicology, while at the same time receiving individual tuition on your principal instrument. In the final year, you’ll write a master's thesis on a topic of your own choosing, under academic supervision.
