English - Master's Programme

The language of instruction in this programme is English. However, Norwegian may also be used.

A master's degree in English opens the world.

The programme provides you with the opportunity to study English literature, language or civilization thoroughly. Additionally, scholarly theory and method is emphasized.

The master's programme builds on the specialization in English within the bachelor's programme in Language and Literature, but involves a deeper and more specialized study within the discipline. Students are expected to deepen their proficiency in using primary and secondary sources, as well as developing a scholarly and critical attitude towards the objects of study. Oral and written language proficiency is also emphasized.

About the Programme

The master's programme in English provides deeper insight into, and increased knowledge within the disciplines language/linguistics, literature and civilization. The programme of study involves a high degree of specialization. It is also possible to opt for an interdisciplinary master's thesis.

It gives candidates qualifications for work within education, and within those professions in which large and complex issues need to be examined and disseminated. Successful completion of the degree may also lead to work in research, publishing, libraries, information and media industries, as well as language technology, translation and international work.
