Course content

The course addresses different aspects of youth culture, identity and diversity in a teacher and student perspective. The course integrates vocational breadth and depth and professional subjects, with emphasis on professional subjects. Vocational and professional practice is closely linked to the content of the course, and secondary school practice takes place in parallel with the course. Topics included in the course are the development of professional and vocational identity, including "the double field of practice", communication and group processes, diversity and belonging, conflict management and interaction and dissemination in various contexts relevant to the vocational teacher role. A multicultural society and health promotion in a public health perspective are integrated into the content of the course.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

The student should

  • have knowledge of youth culture, adolescent living habits and value-based choices
  • have knowledge of health promotion in a public health perspective, including challenges related to physical and mental health, substance abuse, sexuality and gender
  • have knowledge of the multicultural society and cultural differences
  • have knowledge of identity, integration and diversity perspectives and the importance it has for the exercise of the teacher profession
  • have knowledge of communication and interaction in different groups
  • have knowledge of conflict and conflict management 
  • have knowledge of vocational didactic methods in the course 

Skills

The student

  • can apply knowledge about youth culture in vocational education and training
  • can apply knowledge about communication, interaction and dissemination in different groups
  • can reflect on and take into account the challenges people from different minorities face in everyday life
  • can supervise people from different backgrounds and prerequisites
  • can apply different strategies for working with conflict and conflict management

General competence

The student should

  • be able to communicate central subject matter in the course, both in writing, orally and through other relevant forms of expression 
  • be able to exchange views and experiences with others and through this promote the development of good practice in meeting with people from different backgrounds and prerequisites
  • be able to contribute to reflection on the value of diversity in society
  • have knowledge of legislation and regulations related to needs and rights different minority groups
  • has basic insight into and critical attitude towards key ethical issues

Learning methods and activities

The course includes teaching, excursions and other learning activities at gatherings, and digital learning activities between the sessions. There are mandatory work requirements in the course and self-work and group work are scheduled between the sessions. Guidance is offered in connection with and between the sessions.

The assignments are assessed as approved/not approved. All coursework requirements must be approved in order to take the exam.
